Plywood vs. MDF Cabinets: Where Each One Belongs
What each material is, why premium painted doors are often MDF, and how to read the construction line on a quote.
Plywood belongs in cabinet boxes; MDF belongs in painted doors and panels. That's the specification most well-built kitchens actually use, and it contradicts the showroom instinct that plywood means quality and MDF means cheap. Plywood holds screws, resists humidity, and carries weight. MDF has no grain to telegraph through paint and no seasonal movement to crack a joint — which is why premium painted doors are frequently MDF by choice, not by cost-cutting.
Getting that distinction right does more for reading a cabinet quote than any brand name on it, because the two materials fail in completely different ways and a quote rarely explains which one is where.
The three materials people mix up
Plywood is thin wood veneers — plies — stacked with the grain of each layer running perpendicular to its neighbors, then glued under pressure. The cross-lamination is the point: wood is strong along its grain and weak across it, so alternating the direction makes a sheet that is stable, stiff, and holds a screw the way solid lumber does. Cabinet-grade plywood wears a hardwood face veneer, usually birch or maple.
MDF — medium-density fiberboard — starts as wood broken down to individual fibers, blended with resin, and pressed into a dense, perfectly uniform sheet. No grain, no knots, no voids, no direction. It machines like butter: router a profile into an MDF door edge and the cut comes out glass-smooth, ready for primer.
Particleboard — the material MDF gets blamed for — is coarser: wood chips rather than fibers, lower density, usually faced with melamine in budget cabinet boxes. It is the flat-pack standard and the reason "engineered wood" makes people nervous. MDF is not particleboard, any more than a cast part is a welded one. Lumping them together is how buyers end up paying to avoid the wrong material.
Where plywood earns its reputation: the boxes
The cabinet box — sides, back, floor, shelves — does structural work for decades. It carries dishes, anchors hinges and drawer slides, hangs on a wall from a rail. This is plywood territory, for reasons you can feel:
- Screw retention. Cross-laminated plies grip threads. A hinge plate screwed into plywood can be removed and re-driven during installation or a later repair without stripping — something MDF and particleboard forgive far less.
- Weight. A 3/4" sheet of MDF weighs roughly a third more than the same sheet of plywood. Multiply across a wall of uppers and the difference lands on your hinges, your mounting rails, and your installers.
- Moisture tolerance. No sheet good survives standing water, but plywood shrugs off the humidity swings and minor incidents of real kitchen life far better than fiber-based boards.
- Shelf stiffness. Plywood shelves sag less over long spans loaded with plates — and a sagging shelf is the kind of small daily annoyance no one renovates to acquire.
Where MDF quietly wins: painted doors
Here is the part that surprises people: on a painted kitchen — and painted kitchens dominate Bay Area remodels — the premium door choice is very often MDF, on merit.
The reason is seasonal movement. Solid wood never stops responding to humidity: it swells in damp winters and shrinks in dry summers, mostly across the grain. A classic five-piece shaker door built from solid wood is a frame of rails and stiles around a floating panel, and every joint in it moves a little all year. Under stain, that movement hides in the grain. Under paint, it telegraphs: hairline cracks open along the rail-and-stile joints, and a thin witness line creeps around the panel. It isn't a defect — it's wood doing what wood does — but on a white kitchen it reads as one.
MDF doesn't move. A one-piece MDF shaker door, machined from a single blank, has no joints to open and no grain to telegraph through the finish. The paint film stays intact for years. That is why quality manufacturers route their painted door programs through MDF and reserve solid wood and veneer for stain-grade finishes, where the grain is the whole point. If a dealer offers you solid wood painted doors as the "upgrade," ask about joint cracking before you pay for it.
The moisture question, honestly
MDF's genuine weakness is water. A raw MDF edge that stays wet swells, and the swelling is permanent — no drying, no sanding, no recovery. Plywood delaminates only under real abuse and tolerates the everyday humidity cycle of a working kitchen. Practical translation:
- Sink base: insist on a plywood box here even if you economize elsewhere, and consider a waterproof base mat. This cabinet lives closest to every future leak.
- Dishwasher neighbors: steam and drips age these boxes fastest; plywood buys forgiveness.
- Doors: factory-finished MDF doors are sealed on all six faces and handle kitchen humidity fine. The horror stories almost always involve raw edges — site-cut, site-drilled, never resealed.
What good semi-custom kitchens actually use
Read the spec sheets of well-regarded semi-custom lines — the tier we most often recommend, and the one lines like Bellmont live in — and a pattern appears: plywood boxes, MDF painted doors, solid or veneered wood stained doors. That combination is not a compromise; it is each material assigned to the job it does best. The structure gets screw-holding, moisture-tolerant plywood. The painted faces get dimensionally stable, crack-free MDF. The stain-grade faces get real grain. Reading the material spec on a quote
Quotes hide material decisions behind comfortable phrases. Two of them deserve special suspicion:
- "All-wood construction." Particleboard and MDF are made of wood. The phrase is technically true of almost anything. Make the quote say plywood, with a thickness — 1/2" or 3/4" — if plywood is what you're buying.
- "Furniture board." This is particleboard wearing a nicer name. It can be acceptable in a dry upper cabinet at the right price; it should be a choice you made, not one you discover.
Five questions that settle the spec in two minutes with any dealer:
- What are the box sides and back made of, and how thick?
- What are the shelves, and what span are they rated for?
- What is the painted door program — one-piece MDF, MDF panel in a wood frame, or solid wood?
- Is the sink base floor upgraded or protected?
- What does the plywood-box upgrade cost if it isn't standard? (Dealers commonly quote this as a per-cabinet upcharge; market-reported figures typically add a mid-single-digit percentage to the cabinet order.)
What to insist on, what to let go
Insist on: plywood at the sink base and around the dishwasher; sealed edges on every MDF component; a written material spec instead of a slogan; one-piece or MDF-panel construction on painted shaker doors.
Let go: the idea that MDF anywhere means a cheap kitchen; all-plywood dogma on a painted job where the doors will thank you for MDF; paying a premium for solid-wood painted doors that will hairline within two winters.

Is MDF worse than plywood for kitchen cabinets?
Neither is "worse" — they solve different problems. Plywood is the better structural material for boxes and shelves: lighter, stiffer, better screw retention, more moisture-tolerant. MDF is the better substrate for painted doors and panels: dimensionally stable, so paint doesn't crack at joints or telegraph grain. Quality kitchens routinely use both.
Do MDF cabinet doors hold up in a real kitchen?
