Start with the plan, not the door style

Kitchens differ. Some are galley or single-wall layouts where every inch of run matters; others open to the living space, where the cabinetry is on view from the sofa and storage has to hide in fewer walls. Neither is a bad kitchen. Both need a plan before anyone talks about door styles.

Useful questions to bring to a first meeting: Where does storage run out today? Do two people cook at once? What has to stay on the counter, and what could live behind a door? Those are space-planning questions first and cabinet-selection questions second, which is why every project starts with a conversation about your space, storage needs, lifestyle and the look you're after, not a catalog.

Matching the cabinetry to the home's architecture and flooring — not just to a photo you liked online — is what makes a kitchen feel intentional. If you have them, photos of your home's exterior and existing flooring are useful to bring to a first visit, along with measurements or a floor plan.

"Custom" gets used loosely in this industry, so to be precise: in the Excelle custom line it means cabinetry built to your exact dimensions, not selected from a fixed size chart. Odd angles, soffits and narrow walls beside windows are where that matters. One possible approach for a room with a few awkward spots is to let a manufacturer line cover most of the kitchen with size modifications and use custom pieces only where standard sizes can't fit. Whether that works for your kitchen depends on matching finishes and door styles across the two and on the quotes for each, which we compare at the design stage.

Framed, frameless, inset, overlay: the decisions that change the kitchen

Once the layout is set, the next decisions are construction style and door style. Framed cabinets have a face frame across the front of the box, a classic American look. Frameless (full-access, European-style) construction drops the face frame for clean lines and more usable interior space. We design and supply both.

Door style is a separate decision. Full overlay doors cover almost the entire frame for a clean, contemporary look. Partial overlay shows more of the frame between doors and reads more traditional. Inset doors sit flush inside the frame for a furniture-like look.

Beyond the kitchen

If a bathroom will be redone later, choosing its vanity finish alongside the kitchen's helps the wood tones and paint colors work together.

Caring for new cabinetry

Care rules come from the manufacturer of the line you choose, so ask for its care and warranty documents and read them before trying a new cleaner. They can be specific. Bellmont's warranty, for example, excludes claims related to "moisture, sunlight, household cleaners" and general wear; notes that exposure to ultraviolet light, air, humidity or moisture speeds the normal color change of wood, veneers, paints and finishes; and requires thermofoil or laminate doors and drawer fronts on either side of a range or oven to be opened during high-heat cycles such as broiling and self-cleaning. Other lines have their own terms, which is one more reason to compare them before you order.
