Custom Kitchen Cabinets in San Jose

Short answer: Excelle Kitchen & Bath designs and supplies custom kitchen cabinets for San Jose homes at two levels: the Excelle custom line, built to your exact dimensions for odd-sized or non-standard spaces, and five premade manufacturer lines (Shiloh, Eclipse, Bellmont, J&K, Boxy) with size modifications at a more accessible price and lead time. Framed or frameless, inset or overlay, traditional or modern: we plan the layout first, then specify the cabinetry and coordinate your order. Installation and other trades go to partners we refer.

Premade or fully custom — the right level for your kitchen

Kitchen cabinetry comes at two levels. Premade cabinetry comes from manufacturer lines with a wide range of sizes, door styles, finishes, and modifications — excellent quality and flexibility at a more accessible price and lead time. Fully custom cabinetry is built to your exact dimensions and specifications, with unlimited configurations, special sizes, and unique details — the right choice for non-standard spaces or a fully bespoke design.

The right level balances budget, timeline, and how specific your space and storage needs are. We carry both, across Shiloh, Eclipse, Bellmont, J&K, and Boxy plus our own custom line, so the recommendation follows your space and budget rather than a single catalog. See how the lines compare on our cabinet brands page, or read our custom vs semi-custom vs IKEA comparison.

Construction choices that define the kitchen

How the door sits relative to the cabinet face frame, and whether there is a face frame at all, defines much of a kitchen's character — and its price. We build all four configurations:

ConfigurationConstructionWhat it looks likeWhere it fits
Full overlayFramedDoors cover the frame almost entirely, leaving only a hairline between them, so a run reads as one surfaceA clean, contemporary kitchen where the cabinetry sits back into the architecture
Partial overlayFramedA margin of frame shows around every door — the traditional American lookA whole-kitchen remodel where the budget has to reach every run; the most economical route to solid framed construction
InsetFramedDoors sit flush inside the frame, so every gap has to be even and stay evenPeriod and craftsman homes; precise, timeless and premium
Full accessFrameless (European)No face frame: wider openings, full-width drawers, the whole box availableSmall or hard-working kitchens that need the most usable space

Style runs alongside construction. Traditional means shaker and raised-panel doors, furniture details, and warm finishes; modern means flat-panel, handle-less doors, frameless construction, and matte and wood-grain finishes. These choices — not just the brand — drive most of a kitchen's character and cost. Our kitchen & vanity cabinetry page walks through each in detail, and the framed vs frameless guide goes deeper on construction.

When fully custom is worth it

Premade lines are the sweet spot for most kitchens. The Excelle custom line earns its place when the space or the design won't fit a manufacturer's size range:

  • Odd-sized or non-standard spaces — walls, ceilings or openings that premade sizes and modifications can't fill cleanly.
  • Special sizes and configurations — cabinetry built to exact dimensions, with unlimited configurations and unique details.
  • A fully bespoke design vision — when the look you want is specific enough that a catalog would force compromises.

What moves the price either way is scope, sizes and selections. Premade lines sit at the more accessible end and fully custom work costs more; for the market-wide numbers, see our kitchen cabinet cost guide for the Bay Area, and book a consultation with your layout for a real figure.

Design first, cabinets second

We don't start with cabinets — we start with how you live. Space planning is our core strength: layout, storage, and flow get optimized before a single cabinet is chosen. That's the difference between a kitchen that photographs well and one that works every day for how you actually cook and store.

How we work

Every project follows the same four-step path: a consultation to understand your space, storage needs, and the look you want; space planning to optimize layout, flow, and storage before a single cabinet is chosen; design & selection, where we refine door styles, finishes, materials, and hardware together; and delivery & support — we coordinate your order and connect you with trusted partners for the rest of the project.

Excelle is a cabinet and storage design studio, not a general contractor. We plan the space, design the cabinetry, and guide product selection; when a project needs trades we don't provide, we refer partners we trust.

Caring for new cabinets

Follow the care guide from the manufacturer of the line you choose, since finishes differ. As one example, Bellmont's published care instructions say to "use a soft, damp cloth with mild soap and warm water," then dry surfaces and joints with a soft, clean cloth, and to "avoid cleaners with petroleum, ammonia, alcohol, or abrasives." Bellmont also notes that even door and drawer reveals often need small hinge adjustments at installation, which it lists as the installer's responsibility, and advises adjusting doors and drawers before drilling for handles or knobs. Ask for the care sheet for your specific line and finish when you order.

Frequently asked questions

How much do custom kitchen cabinets cost in San Jose?
It depends on scope, sizes, and selections — premade manufacturer lines sit at the more accessible end, and fully custom work costs more. Door configuration matters too: partial overlay is the most economical route to framed construction, and inset is the premium option. See the price guide on our brands page, or book a consultation with your layout for a real number.
Should I choose premade or fully custom cabinets?
Premade manufacturer lines offer wide ranges of sizes, door styles, finishes, and modifications at a more accessible price and lead time — the sweet spot for most kitchens. Fully custom is built to exact dimensions with unlimited configurations, ideal for non-standard spaces or a bespoke design vision.
Can you build cabinets for an odd-sized or non-standard kitchen?
Yes. The Excelle custom line is built to exact dimensions and specifications for odd-sized or non-standard spaces, with special sizes and unlimited configurations. Premade lines also allow size modifications, so the space-planning stage decides which level the kitchen needs.
What is the difference between framed and frameless cabinets?
Framed cabinets have a face frame that adds strength and a classic American look. Frameless (European-style) construction is full-access with clean lines and more usable interior space, and pairs naturally with modern, handle-less doors. Excelle designs and supplies both.
Is inset or overlay better for my kitchen?
It depends on the look and the budget. Full overlay doors cover almost the whole frame for a clean, contemporary run; partial overlay shows a margin of frame for a traditional look and is the most economical framed option; inset doors sit flush inside the frame, suit period and craftsman homes, and are the premium choice.
Do you install the cabinets too?
Excelle is a cabinet and storage design studio: we plan the space, design the cabinetry, guide selection, and coordinate your order. For trades we don’t provide, we connect you with trusted partners we work with regularly.
